New superintendent may be on board by June 25

BERNARD HOTT
ROMNEY — Hampshire County School Board President Bernie Hott said Tuesday afternoon that a new superintendent could be named by as early as June 25.
But Hott said during a phone interview from his home that board members aren’t going to jump at the first person who comes along.
“We have a certain criteria that we are looking for,” said Hott. “We want a good candidate who can get the job done.”
According to Hott, board members will review applications for the position at a special meeting on June 18.
The application process ends June 14.
“We want to narrow the search down to the top three candidates,” Hott said.
Those candidates will then be interviewed Thursday morning, June 21, by a committee of eight persons, according to Hott.
That committee will consist of a teacher, a representative of the servicepersonnel, a principal and a director from the central office, as well as four individuals from the community, Hott said.
As of press time, Hott said he had four names to call within the

community, but  did not want to release the names until each one agreed to sit on the committee.
According to Hott, members of the committee will rate the top three candidates during the interview process — not as far as first, second and third preference, but as far as qualifications.
Board members will then conduct an interview of the three candidates that afternoon, Hott said.
“We won’t see the score cards from the first committee until after we have completed our interviews,” said Hott. “We don’t want anything to influence our decision.”
He said the board would then compare notes with the committee following the interview process.
“We may get six good applicants the first time around, and we may not get any,” said Hott. “So we are leaving the option open that we can readvertise for the position and start all over if we have to.”
