Agent Injured When Indiana Home Explodes

A real estate agent was preparing to show a vacant home to a family in Gary, Ind., when the home exploded, seriously injuring the agent.

Patricia Conforti, 51, an agent with RE/MAX Integrity Group in Merrillville, Ind., was rushed to a hospital. Her condition is unknown. The prospective buyers–a family with young children–had not yet arrived at the home for the showing.

“It sounded like a bomb,” a neighbor, who lives across the street, told the Post-Tribune of Merrillville about the house explosion. Neighbors described brick and glass flying into the air, followed by a woman’s screams.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time and still under investigation. The Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said that servicers were at the home earlier in the day to turn the gas on.

Law enforcement officials caution that a “rotten egg” smell is added to natural gas as a warning when gas leaks are present. If you ever smell that odor, you should exit the home and seek help immediately.
