Chester N. Grapes

Chester Neil Grapes, 90, of Romney, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born on August 5, 1928 in Hoy, he was the son of the late Virgil B. Grapes and Flora E. Cheshire Grapes.

He owned and operated C. Neil Grapes and Sons for several years, working on heavy equipment. He was a member of Mill Creek Ruritan and Christ Community Church of Augusta.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Alice Grapes on Feb. 4, 2005; a son, Philip Wayne Grapes; 8 brothers: Hugh, Kelly, Glenn “Tom,” Cleo, Leo, Edgar “Shorty,” Olyn and Eugene Grapes; and 2 sisters, Opal Heavner and Maude Thorp.

He is survived by his wife, Verda Kessel Grapes; 3 sons, Terry Neil Grapes of Craigsville, Va., Virgil Benton Grapes II, of Romney, and David Lynn Grapes of Birdsboro, Pa.; a sister, Enid Saville of Romney, 8 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019, at 12:30 p.m. at McKee Funeral Home in Augusta with Pastor Don Kesner officiating. Interment will be in Tearcoat Cemetery in Augusta. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Community Church, PO Box 786, Augusta, WV, 26704.

All arrangements are being handled by McKee Funeral Home in Augusta.
