Telamon Corporation, Eastern West Virginia Community Action Agency, Hampshire County Pathways, and The West Virginia Coalition to End Homelessness are preparing for the annual Point-in-Time Count of the homeless in the Potomac Highlands. This count is required by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to be completed during the last 10 days of January. The State of West Virginia, as a whole, decided to conduct the count beginning at 4 PM on Monday, January 27, and to run for a 24-hour period of time, ending at 3:59 PM on Tuesday, January 28.
Volunteers are needed to form “street teams” to assist in locating and completing surveys with the homeless in our community during the 24 hour period. Over the last several years this count has helped locate numerous men, women, and children who are homeless in the Potomac Highlands on any given night. The PIT information has also spurred development of a housing program, designed to assist in housing and providing a “hand-up.” The new Potomac Highlands Permanent Supportive Housing Program is designed to help homeless and disabled individuals and families throughout the region. The development of this program has allowed the Potomac Highlands to receive homeless services for the first time.
Volunteers are needed to perform the count throughout different areas in the county. A training session will take place on January 23, 2014 at The Bank of Romney’s Community Room located at 95 East Main Street in Romney from 10am – 12noon. Pre-registration is requested.
Telamon Corporation, in conjunction with Eastern West Virginia Community Action Agency and Hampshire County Pathways, will host a “come in from the cold” event on Tuesday, January 28th, as part of the 2014 Point-In-Time Count. The event will be hosted from 10am-4pm at the Hampshire County Pathways, 41 Bolton Street, Romney, WV 26757. Soup and sandwiches, hygiene kits, and information/referral resources to homeless families and individuals will be provided. Surveys may also be completed at the Telamon Corporation office, 134-C West Sioux Lane, Romney, WV 26757.
Anyone interested in attending the volunteer training or donating needed items (soup and sandwich supplies, hygiene items, and/or cash donations) should contact Melissa Moore at firstname.lastname@example.org or 304. 822.4514.
