CRAIGSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — Nicholas County Sheriff David L. Hopkins says an 84-year-old man killed by police during a standoff ignored numerous pleas to surrender.

Hopkins says every tactic available was used to resolve Saturday’s standoff peacefully.

The sheriff says John Evans shot and wounded two deputies with a shotgun during the standoff at his home in Craigsville. He exchanged gunfire with other officers and was fatally shot when he exited the back door and fired the shotgun again.

Hopkins says police fired multiple canisters of tear gas into Evans’ home. Evans’ son tried unsuccessfully to reach him by telephone.

Officers even sent a state police robot equipped with a loudspeaker onto the porch in an attempt to persuade Evans to surrender. But Evans shot the robot.
