HARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A wounded military veteran from West Virginia has received the gift of a new home from a nonprofit group.

Bruce Burgess of Martinsburg was handed a key to the mortgage-free home during a ceremony Wednesday at Charleston’s Haddad Riverfront Park.

Media outlets report Burgess is the first in West Virginia to receive a home from the Military Warriors Support Foundation.

Burgess says the gift will help him focus on the treatment he needs to fully recover from his injuries.

Burgess served in the Army for a decade and was a bomb technician. He was injured several times from IED blasts. He received his first Bronze Star in 2003
