CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — More than three-quarters of West Virginia taxpayers filed their state income tax returns electronically this year.

Tax Department spokesman Danny Forinash says 78 percent of the 755,000 tax returns received by the agency were filed electronically.

Forinash says taxpayers who filed electronically and used direct deposit receive their refunds faster than those who filed paper returns and requested refund checks to be mailed to them.

About 466,000 refunds totaling more than $153 million have been issued through midnight Tuesday. That’s about $6 million more than during the same period in 2012.

Refund amounts are averaging $328 so far.
