Commander Lawrence A. McKinney, USNR, 73, of Wardensville, who “ran the race and fought the fight” went to be with his Lord Friday, April 12, 2013, at his home.
Born Oct. 9, 1939, in Carmi, Ill., he was a son of the late Jack and Edith Belle Haas McKinney. Also preceding him in death was a granddaughter, Ashley Megan Myers.
He was a man of true courage, strength, humor and compassion. He served our country proudly in the United States Navy for 28 years.
He married Mary E. “Punky” Atteberry McKinney on Aug. 20, 1961. When Larry and Punky spoke their vows, through sickness and in health, it truly was so. Larry had a heart transplant March 23, 2002, and was a case study for the doctors from then on. He kept his sense of humor; from darkness he always found the light. He touched many, many lives. He loved his church and church family, who know that he is singing, dancing, joking and laughing with Jesus and his granddaughter, Ashley.
Surviving with his wife of 51 years are a son, Kelly McKinney and fiancée Annette Chaney, of Wardensville; a daughter, Wynnie Myers of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren, Brandon McKinney and fiancée Heather Kelly, Laurlee Chaney and Alexis Mae McKinney; two sisters, Peggy Walker of Seattle, Wash.; and Cindy Zotecki of Joliet, Ill.
A funeral service was held at New Hope Baptist Church, Cross Junction, Va., on Tuesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George Reed officiating. Interment will be at a later date at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to Donate Life, 1864 Concert Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23464 or New Hope Baptist Church, 200 Dogwood Dr., Cross Junction, VA 22625.
