MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University is partnering with MJR Evansdale Development LLC to build new student housing on the Evansdale campus.
WVU vice president for administration and finance Narvel Weese said Thursday the $90 million University Park development on 7 acres is the third and final phase of the university’s student housing master plan.
WVU acquired the property from MJR Evansdale Development for $14.7 million. WVU said the developers will privately finance the construction costs, and the project will revert to the university in 40 years.
In October, WVU announced a partnership with Paradigm Development Group LLC to build a $70 million residential and retail complex called University Place in the Sunnyside section of Morgantown. That build-out is expected to be done by the fall semester of 2014.
The University Place development will also include nearly 30,000 square feet of retail space, with tenants that are expected to include a grocery store, a restaurant and a fitness center. A substation for WVU Police is also planned.
Weese said the University Park development includes an 1,100-bed housing complex, WVU and other food services, and retail development.
“WVU must continue to upgrade its housing in order to appeal to the needs of our diverse student population, which includes traditional undergraduates, but more international and graduate students as well as families,” Weese said. “This final phase — which follows the University Place development in Sunnyside and the replacement of College Park apartments — helps us achieve those goals.”
University Park will replace student housing at Fieldcrest Hall and the Medical Center and Pierpont apartment complexes. Fieldcrest Hall and the Medical Center Apartments will be demolished, while Pierpont Apartments’ lease with the university won’t be renewed.
University Park is expected to be ready for occupancy in fall 2015.
