GREAT CACAPON — A well-known baseball coach was killed Saturday afternoon while fishing with his son and grandson. Berkeley Springs resident Ronald “Ronnie” Clatterbuck was fishing with his son Ross and grandson Chasen on the Cacapon River when their boat capsized in the early afternoon, and the trio was swept downriver, according to state news sources.

Morgan County emergency officials Clatterbuck’s son was able to bring him to shore, where he could not be revived.

A Maryland State Police helicopter was used to lower a basket to rescue the grandson who was trapped on a different shoreline, surrounded by steep cliffs.

Clatterbuck helped lead the Berkeley Springs High team to its only state championship back in 1983. The game was played at the old Watt Powell Park in Charleston.
