Gary W. Pownell, 69, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at York Hospital in York, Pa.
Born in Romney on March 9, 1943, he was the son of the late Paul G. Pownell and the late Nina Saville Pownell. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Richard Pownell and Gerald Merritt; and sisters, Joanne Powell, Carolyn Cqoffey and Virginia Alexander. His parents died when he was young and he lived with the late Alma and Lonnie Merritt.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He worked for SKF in Hanover, Pa., for many years prior to retiring. After retiring he worked for Advance Auto in Hanover and Southern School District. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Grove, Pa., and Shiloh American Legion Post. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and playing bingo, but cherished the time he spent with his family and close friends.
In addition to his wife, Christine W. Warner Pownell, with whom he celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary Dec. 2, 2012, are his son Paul G. Pownell and wife Rae Ann of Jefferson, Pa.; his daughter, Julie A. Cox and husband Brian of Spring Grove, Pa.; his grandchildren, Jennah and Gary Pownell and Kameron and Kierstyn Cox; his sisters, Mary Lee Brown of Romney and Velma Jean Woods of West Virginia; his brothers, Kenneth Merritt of West Virginia and Merle Merritt of Virginia; many nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Maggie.
Family and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 146 N. Main St., Spring Grove, Pa., with the Rev. Paul Schenck officiating. He will be laid to rest following the Mass at Jefferson Cemetery with a flag-folding ceremony provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to American Heart Assoc., 140 Roosevelt Ave., Suite 208, York PA 17401 or the American Cancer Society, 924 N. Colonial Ave., York PA 17403.
