MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dr. Larry Lauer, one of the most influential sport educators in America, will visit the West Virginia University campus to discuss the coach’s role in positive youth development through sport.

Lauer, a coaching educator for USA Hockey, will speak to WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences faculty and students on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 12:30-1:45 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum, room 172. The presentation is free and open to the public.

“Having Dr. Lauer come to WVU to share his expertise as a sport psychology consultant, research and coaching education expert is a great opportunity for our students and for the community,” said Kristen Dieffenbach, assistant professor, athletic coaching education, CPASS.

As the sport psychology consultant to USA Hockey’s National Team development program, Lauer consults with athletes, teams and coaches from the youth to professional levels of sport.

He has served as a coaching educator for USA Hockey for more than a decade and has worked in junior player camps and parent workshops. Lauer is an AASP Certified Consultant, listed in the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry, 2008-2012, and is a correspondent to NHL.com writing mental toughness articles during the National Hockey League playoffs.

In the past, Lauer has coached baseball, hockey, tennis, and basketball, and has a USA Hockey Advanced Level coaching certification. Larry served as hockey director in Philadelphia/South Jersey and Charlotte, NC. Specifically, he worked for the Philadelphia Flyers rink development department and Flyers Skate Zone as a community youth ice hockey director where he oversaw programs and tournaments and taught in hockey camps and clinics.

Lauer serves as director of coaching education and development in the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University. He earned a doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in exercise and sport science, sport psychology and is the lead consultant for Championship Performance Consulting.
