A police report says the 15-year-old boy was on suspension when he brought the small-caliber handgun into the school last week.
A Cabell County Schools official says that in large schools, every staff member doesn’t always know who is suspended.
Secondary Schools administrative assistant Todd Alexander says the incident could serve to improve communication.
Police arrested the student in a retail store. He’s being held at a juvenile facility on weapons charges.
State figures show Huntington High has about 1,600 students.
