CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Jackson County’s wandering water buffalo aren’t wandering anymore.

Residents have reported seeing two water buffalo in the Evans area for several months.

Department of Agriculture spokesman Buddy Davidson says the agency used food to lure a mother water buffalo and her calf to a shed on Wednesday. The animals were then moved to a holding site and placed in quarantine.

The quarantine is a precaution and the animals are doing well, according to Davidson A decision on the animals’ future hasn’t yet been made.

Agriculture officials believe the water buffalo came from a local game farm that closed last year.

Water buffalo are native to Southeast Asia.
