Apples-133x150CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s official state fruit, the Golden Delicious apple, is being recognized with a stamp.

The Postal Service said the 33-cent postcard stamps featuring four apple varieties are now available on its website, at post offices nationwide or by phone at (800) 782-6724. The stamps are available in panes of 20 or coils of 100.

According to the state Division of Culture and History, the Golden Delicious apple was discovered on a family farm in Clay County in 1905. The apple became popular for its sweet flavor and is now grown around the world. It was designated the official state fruit in 1995.

In 1972, Clay County held its first Golden Delicious Apple Festival. A celebration is scheduled this year for Sept. 19-22 in Clay.

Festival president Terri Allen was excited to hear news of the stamp.

“I am just tickled,” Allen said. “I did not know they were doing that.”

Prices for postcard stamps are going up to 33 cents from 32 cents Jan. 27.

The new stamps have an art print look. Other apple varieties featured are the Northern Spy, the Baldwin and the Granny Smith.

“We wanted to come up with an attractive, colorful set of stamps for mailing postcards that would be used by consumers and small businesses,” Postal Service spokesman Mark Saunders said.

Saunders says West Virginia will be honored with another stamp this year to commemorate the state’s 150th anniversary. An issue date has not been announced.

Saunders said the West Virginia stamp will be a part of the Postal Service’s global “forever” stamp series. It features a 2008 image by Tyler County photographer Roger Spencer showing an early morning view from the Highland Scenic Highway in Pocahontas County.
