MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia has announced the second addition to its defensive staff in as many days, hiring Tony Gibson as safeties coach.

Gibson spent the past season as safeties coach at Arizona under former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez.

Gibson fills an opening left when outside linebackers coach Steve Dunlap was fired last month. Joe DeForest was defensive coordinator and safeties coach last season before being demoted prior to the Pinstripe Bowl.

A Boone County native, Gibson coached defensive backs at West Virginia from 2001 to 2007 and again under Rodriguez at Michigan from 2008 to 2010. He was an assistant coach at Pittsburgh in 2011.

Gibson was hired on Wednesday. A day earlier, the Mountaineers announced the hiring of Brian Mitchell as cornerbacks coach.
