Tuesday fatality reported in Capon Bridge

ROMNEY — A single vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon near Capon Bridge resulted in a teen from Whitacre, Va. losing his life.

West Virginia State Police said 18-year-old Hunter Crane, a senior at James Wood High School, Winchester, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crane was driving north on West Virginia State Secondary Route 6, Smokey Hollow Road.

“The vehicle exited the west roadway edge, struck a utility pole, and rolled several times and came to a rest after striking a tree,” reported Senior Trooper J. D. Carson, Romney detachment.

The James Wood High School website lists Crane, No.55, playing varsity football for the fall 2012 season as an offensive and defensive lineman.

Crane was well known as a racecar driver at the Winchester Speedway, according to The Winchester Star.

Trooper First Class M. M. Massie assisted with the crash investigation.

Members from Capon Bridge EMS, Capon Bridge Volunteer Fire Department, Gore Volunteer Fire Department, Hampshire County Advanced Life Support 101, Slanesville Volunteer Fire Department and Slanesville EMS were at the scene.

Hampshire County Medical Examiner Penny Hartman also assisted with the investigation.

The case remains under investigation by Senior Trooper Carson, Romney detachment.
