MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The expansion of a five-mile segment of Interstate 81 in the Martinsburg area is expected to be completed in September.

Division of Highways district engineer Lee Thorne says the project is about 38 percent complete.

Thorne says the expansion will add a third lane on both the northbound and southbound sides, along with concrete median barriers.

Work on the project began in April 2012.

The Department of Transportation determined that the expansion is needed to reduce accidents and handle an increase in traffic, according to Thorne.
