Romney, W.Va. — The Hampshire County Education Association will hold a candlelight protest of the controversial firing of State Schools Superintendent Jorea Marple on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Old Courthouse on Main St. prior to the community Christmas Tree lighting. This event will occur at the same time as a similar vigil planned by the West Virginia Education Association in Charleston. Participants will stand in a silent group in support of Dr. Marple and those who decry her sudden dismissal as politically motivated, and not in the best interests of the children and schools of West Virginia.
All school employees, families, and others from across the region who are concerned with education in West Virginia are invited to join the vigil in Romney. Participants will assemble in a group at the courthouse at 5:30 and should bring a battery operated candle or other safe light or lantern. The community tree lighting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
