History |
 |
| Shaffer-Warnick
Funeral Home was formerly the residence of John Jacob Cornwell,
the 15th Governor of West Virginia and served in the West Virginia
Senate from 1899-1907. Elected governor in 1916, Cornwell's
administration (1917-1921) was chiefly concerned with matters
relating to World War I. The state capitol burned in January
1921 near the close of his term. He became an officer of the
B & O Railroad after leaving office, rising to both a vice
presidency and general counselship.
Mr.
Cornwell and his brother, William, bought the local paper,
The Hampshire Review in 1890 from C. F. Poland. He was also
involved in the banking industry in Romney. He was a member
of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Romney from 1906-1953.
The
building is a two story Colonial Revival American Four Square
with hip roof and side gables and was built by Cornwell in
1914. Very symmetrical, the front one story entrance portico
is balanced by side porches and a porte-cochere. Porticos
are flat roofed and are upheld by square stucco columns.
The
Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home formerly the Shaffer Funeral
Home has been providing quality family funeral service at
the present location since 1959. Mr. And Mrs. Keith Shaffer
purchased the home from the Cornwell Estate. Under the leadership
of Mr. Shaffer, the business grew steadily. The Shaffer 's
attempted to preserve the historic quality of the home, but
with the growth of the business a few changes were made. A
24' X 40' selection room, offices and restrooms were added
in 1964.
